A Few Facts about the EIT in Morrisville
The Earned Income Tax ( EIT) is responsible for lowering Morrisville property taxes by 7.5 mills and brought in $1.8 mill in 2024, with $1.7 mill expected in 2025. The current rate is 1% of earned income. Most townships and boroughs in Bucks County charge an EIT tax; therefore, anyone who works in a borough or township that charges EIT sees their money go to those entities and not to Morrisville. If your township or municipality charges an EIT, you DO NOT pay it where you work.
The benefits of the EIT are that it helps distribute the cost of running the Borough to all residents, not just property owners. Because the EIT is only charged on earned income, not pensions or social security, it provides relief to seniors by reducing their property taxes. It provides a cash-strapped borough like Morrisville with revenue needed to pave streets, maintain and improve existing borough property, and adequately staff its police department.
Some of our opponents’ campaign literature touts the lowering of property taxes as one of their achievements yet they voted against the EIT. Their campaign literature also states the desire to get rid of the EIT. These claims are contradictory. Property taxes were not lowered as a result of reformed spending or better budgeting, but because of the EIT. If anything, current Council is spending recklessly as a result of the boosted EIT revenue.
We believe that the use of this new revenue should be planned carefully and must include accountability and transparency. This is our residents’ hard-earned money, and they deserve respect.
