Council Actions Spark Public Backlash
At the December Council meeting, Council rushed through numerous board and commission appointments with only 24 hours of public notice, effectively denying residents a fair opportunity to apply. While the broader community was shut out, a select few were able to submit letters—comprised largely of unsuccessful candidates in the recent election and their allies. Council also made appointments well before existing terms expired. Taken together, these actions disregard voter intent, undermine basic principles of transparency, and erode trust in a process that should reflect openness, fairness, and respect for the will of the community.
For more than a year, Council failed to fill open board seats, effectively suppressing public participation. Now, as Council anticipates a turnover of half its members, it has abruptly reversed course. This sudden urgency, however, did not result in inclusive or representative appointments. Instead, Council excluded the broader community.
The public is paying attention. In response to the actions taken at the December meeting, a petition has been launched by residents to address these serious breaches of transparency and good governance. We are passing on the info and encourage you to consider adding your name.
