RESPONSE FROM THE MORRISVILLE DEMOCRATIC CLUB ON THE RECENT MASS MAILING OF A BOROUGH NEWSLETTER

There have been many good things done by Councils over the years.  Many of the improvements that you see have been steadily worked on for years by many different people.  It often takes years of plodding away to finally get to a successful finish.  We celebrate and congratulate all who had a part in improving our town.

Remember, for years, we had no money.  Finally, a progressive Council majority found a way to increase our revenue through the Earned Income Tax (EIT) to more equitably share our residents’ tax burden, not just homeowners, and give seniors relief so they can remain in their homes.  Most working residents were paying this tax to other municipalities where they work, not to Morrisville.  For most, this simply ensured that their tax goes to Morrisville, where it can benefit them.  Because of the EIT, Morrisville’s residents have seen a reduction of their property taxes. If it was up to this Council, we would not have had this resource. Yet, they relish it.

In many cases, we see the money squandered on boondoggles instead of building on all the plans and work that have been done over many years. The current Council has wasted tax dollars on unnecessary lawsuits, duplicate studies and grandiose projects that ignore all the public input and sessions of the past.   Meanwhile, the Senior Center remains unsafe because of a treacherous parking lot and no lighting, while Council proposes an extended lighted levee walk. Our historic Library, especially our children’s programs, have been underfunded or defunded. Current Council intends to invest over one-million-dollars in Patriot’s Park (including an amphitheater).

 These are our questions:

• How much did Morrisville residents pay for the development and mailing of this newsletter?

• Do you remember a mailing like this being distributed before?

• What motivated the decision to send this out three weeks before the election?

• Why does it highlight only selected Council members, especially the Council President?

• Why does it ignore activities in the park like the Jazz Festival, Irish Festival, music performances?

One thing is clear, residents have a vision for Morrisville - one that maintains our identity, builds on our character and takes pride in our inherent assets. We want to see that through, not erase our diverse heritage.   Let’s take a steady, directed, progressive approach to improving Morrisville, one that is created together as a community.

Let’s build on what we have, for all of us.  That’s progress.
